Building For Tomorrow: Two Projects Begin This Summer!

Work is underway!

There is a lot happening at First Unitarian this summer! Testing is beginning on our geothermal system, and we are also making important plumbing repairs in the nursery school wing, kitchen, and first-floor restrooms.

Geothermal project moves forward

With the approval of the Board of Trustees, First Unitarian has hired DGA Builders, LLC, to serve as construction manager for our geothermal project. The contract has been signed, and our work together began with a kickoff meeting on June 16.

Early work includes securing construction and drilling permits, ordering equipment that must be purchased well in advance, and coordinating with Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) to install a new transformer. Much of this work will happen behind the scenes, but we expect to see activity on the church property beginning in late July or August.

DGA Builders has provided construction management and general contracting services throughout the Rochester region since 1978. The company has experience managing complex, energy-efficient construction projects, including projects that follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

We are excited to have DGA’s experience guiding this next step in the future of our building. Learn more about DGA Builders and their work.

Plumbing repairs begin in the nursery wing

Alongside the geothermal project, we are addressing significant plumbing problems in the nursery school rooms, kitchen, and first-floor restrooms.

This work must move quickly so the nursery school can be ready when children and staff return in late August. We are working with Postler & Jaeckle, which has maintained and repaired our building’s mechanical systems, and DGA Builders, which is already managing the geothermal project.

Design work is complete, and the first phase will focus on the nursery wing on the north side of the building. The rooms have been cleared, and the nursery corridor will remain closed while construction is underway.

Once the nursery work is complete, repairs will move into the first-floor restrooms and kitchen. These areas will remain open until work begins there.

Thank you for your patience as we care for our building and prepare it to serve our congregation, nursery school, and wider community for years to come. We will continue sharing updates as both projects move forward.
