Spiritual Development
Welcome to our ministry of Adult Spiritual Development at First Unitarian. We're so glad that you are taking the time to take a look around and see what might be right for you. In this sometimes crazymaking culture of ours, there often seem to be too many activities and pursuits competing for our time and attention. Our own self-care and spiritual development can easily fall by the wayside as we struggle to balance work and home, family and friends, volunteer and leisure activities, all while doing what we can to make this world a better place.
At First Unitarian, we encourage you to slow down, to take a break, and to care for yourself while you ae caring for this beautiful and broken world. An old friend of mine once said, "We've got maintenance schedules for our cars, but not for our own bodies and spirits." So we'd like to propose something radical: Join a small group of fellow travelers and meet with them once a month or more. Take a class or explore one of our spiritual practice opportunities. Share the ups and downs of your life, wrestle with questions of the intellect and the heart, lean in - together - to the longings of your life.
As Unitarian Universalists, we trust in the holy conversation and creativity that emerges between people and we know that we cannot go it alone if we want to continue to grow. We also know that most meaningful life change happens over time - through committed, longterm effort. We believe that active attention and intention is essential for our spiritual development - and we hope you find the support you need in one of our Journey Groups, Classes, and/or Spiritual Practice Opportunities. If you are looking for other types of activities, we hope that you will find what you are looking for in our full small groups listing, and in our current Volunteer & Service Opportunities booklet.
Whatever brings you here, I hope you find an opportunity to spark your imagination and fuel your spiritual growth - that together we might do the wonderful but sometimes challenging work of the spirit, evermore aligning our lives and our actions with our values.
Reverend Jen Crow (jen@rochesterunitarian.org) oversees our Spiritual Development Ministry and would be happy to answer anyh of your questions about our small groups. If you have an idea for a new small group or feel the calling to lead a group or a class, she'd love to hear from you as well.
