Our Historical Documents
The archives of the First Unitarian Church of Rochester contain many interesting historical documents. Here are some of them:
- "Covenant for Freedom" by Nancy Salzer, a history of First Unitarian written in 1975.
- "One Hundred and Twenty-Five Years, 1829-1954" by Francis A. Keef, a church history written in 1954 to mark First Unitarian's one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary.
- "A Century of Unitarianism in Rochester" by Harold W. Sanford, a trustee of the church and the editor of the Democrat and Chronicle, a local newspaper. This history was written in 1929 to mark First Unitarian's one hundredth anniversary.
- "Unitarian Church, Rochester, NY" by Rev. William Channing Gannett, a brief historical sketch written in 1906.
- "First Unitarian Congregational Society of Rochester NY - A Sketch of its History, with its Organization and Membership" by Rev Newton Mann. Written in 1881, this earliest history of the church has a list of its members, including Susan B. Anthony, appended to it.
- "Hester C. Whitehurst Jeffrey" by Colleen Hurst. A short biography of this local African American leader, friend of Susan B. Anthony, and member of First Unitarian in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Thanks to Bill Fugate for scanning, OCRing, and proofing many of these documents.
