Interior Views Of the Elevator

continue Building History tour

For several years around 1990 the congregation discussed the need for some kind of elevator to enable those with limited mobility to reach the classrooms, choir loft, and other facilities on the second floor of our church. Minimalist solutions, such as a chair lift or a small vertical lift in the stairwell northeast of the Auditorium, were considered. Eventually a full elevator, serving the basement Youth Room as well as the two main floors and necessitating construction exterior to the existing building, was deemed to best fit our needs and resources.

The elevator was dedicated in March, 1996, to the memory of Marion Ashley Bickford, whose generous 1991 bequest provided both a significant portion of the funding for the project and the bulk of the initial investment in the church Income Endowment.

First floor elevator entry viewed from the southeast corner of the lobby. The door at left leads to a storage room, added as part of the project, which communicates to the outside and is primarily used for groundskeeping and other exterior maintenance equipment.
