Our Louis Kahn Building Over the Years
The History Committee displays, in the glass case in our lobby, changing collections of photographs and other material on themes from the history of our church. One of these focusses on changes to our Louis Kahn building; almost all of the following images are from that exhibit. Special thanks to Dorrie Meeker for providing the photographs for scanning; additional thanks to her, Kay Cummings, Bill Fugate, and others for supplementary information.
Our church is both an architectural treasure and a living building, and these two roles do not always mesh perfectly. Repairs must be made, and new needs (and old needs, newly recognized) must be addressed. While striving constantly to be respectful of the original building and the architectural philosophy that illuminated its design, the congregation has over the years made a series of changes, both minor and significant. The majority of these have been to improve ease of access for congregants and visitors of limited physical agility, but there have been other motivating factors as well. These pages detail most of those changes.
