First Unitarian Church of Rochester

Sunday Morning Religious Education

Church School classes for infants through high school meet from 9:30-10:45 and 11:15-12:30 during the Adult Celebrations from September through Religious Education Sunday in May. During the summer months infant care and a children's program is available during the Adult Celebration, which begins at 10 AM.

Our church school program is staffed by volunteers from our congregation. To be most effective, ours must be a cooperative endeavor between our school and our families, as a child's real center for spiritual growth is within his or her own family. We need a serious commitment from our families. Without parental involvement in the program and regular student attendance, we will fail to establish a religious connection with our young people. It is only those children and youth whose families are here consistently on Sunday mornings who have any chance to "grow" a religion of their own.

The 2007-08 church school program book [PDF format] is available online. Parents are requested to bring their children on a regular basis to get the most out of the program. For more information contact our Director of Religious Education, Jan Gartner, via email at janw@rochesterunitarian.org or through the church office, 271-9070.

Most of our curricula are developed by the Department of Education of the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston, MA. and are based upon the theology of our UU Principles. The age-appropriate materials are designed to be used by trained, non-professional, volunteer teachers in a church school setting.

Our curricula are constantly evaluated through a collaborative process involving the church school students and teachers; the parents; the Religious Education Committee; and the Director of Religious Education, Jan Gartner (janw@rochesterunitarian.org). The Unitarian Universalist values we hope to teach are:
