First Unitarian Church of Rochester

And No One Even Clapped

"Fueled by a million created wings of fire the rocket tore a tunnel through the sky and everybody cheered. Fueled only by the mystery of warm, moist soil, and a beckoning sun, the seedling urged its way through the thicknesses of black - and as it pierced the heavy ceiling of soil and launched itself up into outer space - no one even clapped." (Marcie Hans)

We come into this house of worship from a world in which things dominate our being. We are enthralled with creature comforts which make our lives easier. We are fixated on manipulating the materials of earth for our purposes. Great and marvelous are the things humanity has wrought through creativity, industriousness, imagination. We rightly take pride in our ingenuity and labor.

At the same time, let us take note of the miracle of life and nature and cosmos which we had no hand in creating. Let us celebrate the good gifts of the earth which are ours for the taking. Let us appreciate the riches of our world we had no part in making.

May we never forget the many things about which we cheer in our hearts. May we applaud the beautiful and mighty works human hands have created, and may we also cheer the beautiful and mysterious wonders that happen to us day by day. May we learn how to cheer in our hearts and why.
