Meditation: Spring's Tempting Rehearsal

We come out of the cold and snow to find warmth of spirit.
Here there are no chilling winds, no biting snow,
Only the warmth of our comrades of the way.
We have been fooled again by capricious Mother Nature;
We have been taken in by spring's tempting rehearsal.
Was it only days ago we took off our coats
To bask in soft breezes and bright sunshine?
Was it only last week that we heard geese honking their way north,
Returning to us as a harbinger of warmth and light?
Now, poised on the precipice of spring,
We have been caught off guard again by the return of winter
And our impatience grows.
Not to worry.
We have seen tiny buds on the trees; they will not be denied.
We have noticed eager plants poking through the soil,
Which will withstand the blanket of snow and soon flourish.
We know that spring's tempting rehearsal is for real -
Warm days and pleasant nights are just around the corner
If only we are patient:
If only we have the brave persistence of the grass;
If only we have the patience of the flowers;
If only we have the tenacity of the trees.
Spring will come. We have seen the rehearsal.
May we be ready for the play.
